Will Orban meet with Zelensky? Preliminary talks on this matter are ongoing

During a meeting with the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated that he was “determined” to resolve the dispute with Budapest over the rights of national minorities.

"We agreed on one simple thing. We asked the Hungarian side to provide us with a comprehensive list of questions regarding the protection of minority rights, and we received this list"
Kuleba said at a joint press conference with the head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto.

Kuleba added that now "a special commission will work under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to clarify the matter within 10 days".

Will Orban meet with Zelensky? “We have taken a big step”

Kyiv and Budapest are interested in organizing a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, said the head of Zelensky's office, Andriy Yermak, after talks with the head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto. There are also plans to establish a special commission to deal with the dispute between the countries.

The head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, who participated in the talks, said that both sides agreed to establish a special commission that will prepare proposals regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority living in Ukraine. This topic is the axis of contention between Ukraine and Hungary.

Budapest accuses Kyiv of violating the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. The Hungarian-Ukrainian dispute has been ongoing since at least autumn 2017 when the Ukrainian parliament adopted a new education law. Budapest claims that it affects the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukrainian Transcarpathia because it limits the right to education in their native language. Due to the dispute, Hungary has blocked meetings of the NATO-Ukraine Commission at the highest level for years.

Is the EU at war with Hungary? Media coverage of the Brussels “plan”

Neither Viktor Orban nor Peter Szijjarto has visited Kyiv since the beginning of the Russian invasion. Hungary also notoriously blocks EU aid to Ukraine, which has been fending off a full-scale Russian invasion for almost two years.

The British daily Financial Times reported on Monday that the EU is threatening to hit the Hungarian economy if Orban blocks financial aid for Kyiv at the upcoming summit.

Brussels aims to “jeopardize the Hungarian currency and lead to a breakdown in investor confidence in order to harm workplaces and economic growth”, the daily writes, citing a document prepared by EU officials.
