Recruitment for the branches of the Russian Wagner Group and the supply of military equipment are underway in Belarus, close to the Polish border. The Lithuanian Deputy Minister of the Interior stated that a complete closure of the borders with Belarus is being considered together with Poland.
Lithuania and Poland are considering closing the border with Belarus, Lithuanian Deputy Minister of the Interior Arnoldas Abramavičius said on Friday. On Thursday, the head of the Lithuanian Interior Ministry, Agne Bilotaite, stated that the Border Guard was obliged to closely monitor the situation at the border. Arnoldas Abramavičius said that the crossings would be closed in case of serious incidents involving mercenaries from the Wagner Group.
- Considerations regarding this matter are most likely - said the deputy minister during the press conference, recalling that representatives of the Polish government visited the Polish-Belarusian border on Thursday, where they assessed the situation.
Abramavičius reminded that there are currently about 1,200 mercenaries in Belarus and almost all of them are at the training ground in Osipowicze near Minsk. Several dozen mercenaries are also on the training ground near Brest. In the opinion of the deputy head of the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior, the Wagnerians do not pose a military threat to Poland, but the possibility of carrying out a provocation by them cannot be ruled out.
On Thursday, a briefing was held at the Border Guard Post in Krynki on the Polish-Belarusian border, attended by Mariusz Kaminski, the head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration. As he said, Polish services are prepared for any possible threats from the Wagner Group, which is present in Belarus.
In turn, on Friday, Deputy Prime Minister, PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński, in an interview with Polish Radio 24, pointed out that the Wagnerian supporters are in Belarus to create various types of crises, directed primarily against Poland.
There have also been recent reports from sources related to soldiers in the Belarusian armed forces. According to them, one of the conditions of the contract, during recruitment to the army, is the readiness of mercenaries to participate in combat in neighboring countries, in particular in Poland and Lithuania.
The analysis of satellite images shows that the base of the Wagner Group in the village of Cel contains almost 750 units of military equipment. This is a third more than the previous week. The Wagner group imported cars, buses and military trucks. Several armored vehicles were also spotted among them.
