Urgent vaccination appeal: Kyiv on high alert amid dising measles cases

Kyiv is facing a measles epidemic

A “huge increase” in measles cases has been observed in Kyiv. Romania, neighboring Ukraine, announced an epidemic of this disease in early December. “We must do everything in our power to prevent a measles epidemic like the one that occurred in 2018” — urges the Kyiv health department.

The Kyiv authorities encourage parents to vaccinate their children and inform them that, the Ukrainian capital is at risk of an epidemic outbreak.

While specific figures were not provided, authorities underscored a significant surge in measles cases, noting that such increases tend to occur approximately every 5–6 years. The alarm was further heightened by the recent declaration of a measles epidemic in neighboring Romania in early December. To address this pressing concern, city officials are urging parents to ensure their children receive vaccinations promptly.

The directorate emphasized that vaccination remains the most effective means of protection against measles, a highly contagious and dangerous disease. Highlighting the severity of the situation, officials warned that out of 10 unvaccinated individuals exposed to an infected person, nine are likely to contract the disease.

Free vaccinations for children. Appeal to parents

Notably, the authorities emphasized that vaccination against measles is offered free of charge.

They stressed the importance of understanding the gravity of measles and its potential complications, which can be fatal. Vaccinated children, on the other hand, face a minimal risk of contracting the disease, and if they do, the illness tends to be mild with no lasting health consequences.

It was recalled that vaccination remains the only effective means of protection against measles, which is one of the most infectious diseases in the world. Out of 10 unvaccinated people who come into contact with a sick person, nine will get sick.

“We must comprehend that measles outbreaks are predominantly caused by unvaccinated children. The disease typically originates with them and subsequently spreads to adults. Therefore, our primary appeal is to parents – contact your pediatrician or family doctor now to ensure that your child is vaccinated”.
declared the health authorities.

"Measles poses severe risks, including life-threatening complications. Vaccinated children have a significantly reduced chance of falling ill, and if they do contract the disease, it is likely to be a mild case with no lasting impact on their health and future life.

Taking just two steps – consulting with a doctor and adhering to the vaccination schedule – will ensure the safety not only of the child but also of the entire family and the broader community," concluded the impassioned appeal from the Kyiv authorities.
