Former general Valery Shaitanov

Valeri Shaitanov, a former major general in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of treason, attempted terrorism, and possession of ammunition. The decision was announced by the Prosecutor General's Office and the press center of the Ukrainian security service. The case has been pending since October 2020.

The investigation against the former general concerned his cooperation with Russia in 2014. At that time, he held the position of the first deputy head of the Special Operations Center "A" of the SBU.

According to the investigation, the military man was in constant contact with a Russian agent nicknamed "Bobyl", who was an FSB colonel. He was one of the organizers of military and terrorist activities in the Donbas, which resulted in the establishment of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk.

Attempted terrorist attacks

Treason to the state and contacts with the Russian military are not the only allegations confirmed by the court. According to investigators, Valery Shaitanov used his position in the army to search for soldiers ready to commit a terrorist attack.

The victim was allegedly Major Ichkeria of the Armed Forces of the Chechen Republic, who commanded the International Peacekeeping Battalion during the war in eastern Ukraine. This is Dzhokhar Dudayev.

The attack was supposed to be ordered by the special services of the Russian Federation, but it did not take place due to the earlier detection of the perpetrators.

Law enforcement officials warned at the time that the assassination was being planned by the Russian intelligence services.

Criminal proceedings against the FSB Department of Counterintelligence Operations employee who recruited Shaitanov are currently being heard in absentia in court.
