Ukraine is negotiating security agreements

Vladyslav Vlasyuk, advisor to the head of the Chancellery of the President, announced during a telethon that Ukraine is in negotiations for security agreements with six countries, mirroring the one recently concluded with the United Kingdom. According to him, similar agreements are being worked on with:

  • USA,
  • Germany,
  • Italy,
  • France,
  • Canada,
  • Poland.

The aim across all these countries is identical—to furnish Ukraine with security guarantees, gradually integrating it into the NATO coordinate system through these treaties, as stated by Własiuk.

On January 12, President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signed a security agreement between Ukraine and the United Kingdom. Zelensky had previously mentioned in March 2023 that if Ukraine couldn't become a NATO member during a conflict, it would seek strategic security guarantees.

The G7 leaders' summit convened in Vilnius on July 11-12, where the presidents of the European Council, the European Commission, and representatives of the G7 countries endorsed the Joint Declaration on support for Ukraine. Each country committed to collaborating with Ukraine on specific long-term security commitments and agreements.

Which countries support the Declaration

The initial signatories of the "Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine" were the founders of the initiative: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain, and the United States. Subsequently, Scandinavian countries—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden—joined the G7 in supporting security guarantees for Ukraine. The Baltic countries, comprising Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, officially declared their support on August 17 through a joint statement by their Prime Ministers.

The list of supporting nations later expanded to include the Balkans— Greece, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, and the partially recognized Kosovo. Belgium, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, and Cyprus also expressed their support.
