UN appeals for $4 billion aid to address humanitarian crisis in Ukraine
The United Nations has appealed for financial assistance for Ukraine and its citizens, totaling over four billion dollars. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, approximately 40 percent of Ukraine's entire population requires support.
UN aid chief Martin Griffiths stated "Hundreds of thousands of children live in frontline communities. They are terrified, traumatized, and deprived of the resources necessary for basic functioning". He emphasized that this fact alone should compel us to do everything in our power to bring more humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that, due to the Russian invasion, more than 14.6 million people in Ukraine will need humanitarian assistance this year, constituting approximately 40 percent of the population.
It was indicated that over 3.3 million people in need live "on the front line of fire" in the east and south of the country, including the territories occupied by Russia. This circumstance makes providing assistance to these individuals much more challenging.
As part of the appeal, UN is asking for $3.1 billion for 8.5 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance in 2024. Additionally, the UN refugee agency is seeking $1.1 billion to support 2.3 million Ukrainian refugees and all communities that welcome them.
Since Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022, approximately 6.3 million people have fled abroad. About 4 million people in the country are internally displaced persons, including approximately 1 million children in this group, as recalled by the Bureau quoted by Reuters.
