Ukraine is getting ready for Christmas: celebrations have changed significantly

Christmas in Ukraine also on December 25?

December 25 is a significant day for Christians around the world, including Ukraine, which has been grappling with Russian aggression for almost two years. However, the celebration of Christmas varies across the country, heavily influenced by the prevailing conditions in each town.

The celebration landscape in Ukraine is diverse. In regions, especially in the east and south, directly affected by the threat of Russian missile weapons, the festive atmosphere has been noticeably altered. The security concerns have prompted a shift in the traditional concept of celebration in Ukraine.

Most people want Christmas, "together with the West"

Despite the challenges of war, a majority of Ukrainians, over 60 percent according to public opinion polls, express their intention to celebrate Christmas and New Year. This year marks a significant change, with Eastern denominations aligning their celebrations with those of Western denominations on December 25. Previously, only 18 percent of people had declared their intent to celebrate on this date. Another interesting finding is that 25 percent of respondents plan to celebrate holidays on both December 25 and January 7.

Remarkably, despite the prolonged Russian invasion, Ukrainians express a strong desire for normalcy and peace. In July 2023, the Ukrainian Parliament officially approved December 25 as the new date for Christmas celebrations. Both the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have supported this change, allowing Christians of the Western rite to partake in the festivities.

The need for normality and the desire for peace

In Lviv, the city maintains a semblance of normal life despite the presence of numerous soldiers. While the authorities have curtailed Christmas expenses, the city features a Christmas tree, children, street bands, and decorations. Although large celebrations are unlikely, both residents and soldiers emphasize the importance of this semblance of normality, especially for the well-being of children, who have borne the brunt of the war.

Notably, on December 19, at the Budomierz border crossing, the Bethlehem Light of Peace was handed over to Ukraine in a symbolic gesture of solidarity. The event included a joint prayer by Polish and Ukrainian clergy, concluding with carol singing and heartfelt wishes for peace.
