The issue of food security has an important place in the EU treaties, as does support for farmers under the CAP. Therefore, Kyiv is now trying to change the narrative around Ukraine's future membership in the EU so that it is perceived not as a threat to the EU's coffers, but as beneficial from the point of view of achieving EU goals.
The Ukrainian food system and Ukrainian food supplies can facilitate the European Union's achievement of climate goals but also contribute to food security and increase the profitability of EU agriculture
says Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine.
According to euractic.com, according to Kachka, "the differences between the agricultural policies of the EU and Ukraine are not as large as they seem". Kachka thus referred to Ukraine's central role in providing Europe with animal feed, seed materials and processing plant protection products.
– Some people tried to downplay the role of Ukrainian agriculture, claiming that it does not meet EU standards. It's quite the opposite, Kachka said. He stated that Ukrainian agriculture is developing on the same principles as those in the EU.
As noted by the euractiv.com portal, since the beginning of the year, some Member States have submitted notifications regarding food security as being at risk due to the flooding of EU markets with Ukrainian food, which should have been distributed further, including: to Africa.
However, the European Commission ultimately downplayed the matter, and the Ukrainian authorities maintained that this type of flow of agri-food products was a “normal process” and there were no bottlenecks.
