European Commissioner Thierry Breton shared Trump's alleged statements

European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services, Thierry Breton, recently disclosed previously undisclosed details from a meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2020. During the meeting, Donald Trump allegedly asserted that in the event of an attack on Europe, the United States would not come to its rescue. Furthermore, he purportedly stated that the U.S. would withdraw from NATO.

Despite being a candidate in the upcoming U.S. presidential elections, Trump, who should ideally avoid scandals, saw his statements from over three years ago resurface. Breton revealed the specifics of the conversation between Trump and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

Trump's stance on Europe's defense

According to the EU commissioner, Trump unequivocally expressed his position in the face of a potential threat to Europe. He reportedly said, "You must understand that if Europe is attacked, we will never come to help you and support you".

Furthermore, Trump allegedly declared, "by the way, NATO is dead, and we will leave; we will leave NATO". He also reportedly mentioned that Germany "owed him $400 billion because they did not pay as much as they had for defense".

Trump's status in the U.S. presidential elections

According to Reuters, "Trump is the favorite for the Republican nomination in the 2024 elections", and poll results indicate a fierce competition among candidates for the presidency. The agency also highlights Trump's promises regarding his foreign policy if elected as the new president of the United States.

"Despite making general claims, such as ending the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, which caused anxiety in European capitals, he did not provide more details about his potential actions"
Reuters reported.
