Tragic strike on Kherson train station: one dead, four injured in Russian airstrike

Ukraine's Kherson has come under regular Russian bombardment since Russian troops were forced to withdraw in 2022 to the other side of the Dnipro river that runs alongside the city.

In a tragic incident, a Russian airstrike targeted a train station in Kherson, where civilians were gathered for evacuation from the southern Ukrainian city. The strike resulted in the death of at least one person and injuries to four others, according to the country's interior minister, Igor Klymenko, who shared the grim details on Telegram.

Klymenko described the horrifying scene, stating that approximately 140 civilians were awaiting evacuation at the station when the enemy initiated a massive bombing campaign in the evening. Among the casualties, one policeman lost his life, and two civilians along with two policemen sustained injuries from shrapnel.

President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed deep concern, mentioning that a number of civilians were present at the station during the strike. He assured that rescue services were promptly deployed to the scene to address the aftermath of the attack.

Ukrainian railway company Ukrzaliznytsya reported damage to both the train and the station on Telegram. However, they reassured the public that the situation was under control, and railway operations were ready to resume.

Kherson, which had been occupied by Russian forces following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in late February 2022, has been subjected to regular bombardment since. Ukrainian troops, exerting pressure, managed to force the Russian forces to withdraw to the opposite side of the Dnipro river that runs alongside the city.

Earlier on December 26, Roman Mrochko, the head of the Kherson military administration, disclosed that the city had experienced sustained Russian strikes over the past 24 hours, resulting in four injuries, including one serious case. The situation remains tense, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by civilians in conflict zones.
