The new square in Dnipro has been officially named in honor of Oleksiy Chilsky, a courageous Ukrainian actor and soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice at the frontlines. This decision was unanimously approved during the 41st session of the city council.
Situated on Slobozhansky Avenue, adjacent to buildings No. 65 and 67, the Oleksiy Chilsky Square serves as a poignant tribute to a local hero. Born in Kamensky, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Oleksiy Chilsky embarked on his journey as a volunteer in February 2022 and later willingly joined the Armed Forces.
Known for his unwavering bravery, Oleksiy Chilsky had a remarkable artistic career that spanned nearly fifteen years at the Dnipro theater "We believe!" It was at this theater that he met his wife, Nadia.
Nadia Khilska, Oleksiy's widow, shared her thoughts on the naming of the square, saying, "At the request of the mayor of Dnipro, the city's chief architect contacted me and presented several options for naming after Lyoshyn. There was a park, a street, and this square. I chose the square because it embodies a sense of style, freshness, and greenery that my husband would have appreciated."
Expressing her gratitude for the initiative, Nadia added, "I am very happy and deeply thankful for your support. I am glad that so many people will remember my husband and his heroism. He was a very brave soldier."
Oleksiy Chilsky, in addition to his military service, was a renowned theater and film actor. His acting career began in 2005 at the Dnipro youth theater "We believe!" and later took him to theaters in the capital. Before his deployment, he had also made appearances in films and popular series such as "On Your Side," "The Hen," "The Serf," "Doctor Kowalczuk," "The Opera with Zdrojwo," and "The Riddle for Anna."
He joined the army at the outset of the Great War, serving as a senior sergeant in a reconnaissance platoon. He played an active role in the liberation of Kherson, fought valiantly in Bakhmut and Soledar, all while harboring dreams of returning to his beloved profession after the war.
Tragically, Oleksiy Chilsky passed away on August 17 while fulfilling a combat mission near Zaporozhye, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and dedication. He was only 35 years old. The Oleksiy Chilsky Square stands as a fitting tribute to this extraordinary individual, ensuring that his memory and heroism will be forever etched in the hearts of the people of Dnipro.
