Russian Deportation of Ukrainian Children is a 'War Crime'

The Tragic Reality Unfolds

Russia is forcibly deporting Ukrainian children from the occupied territories of Ukraine on a massive scale. The first Ukrainian child was abducted by Russia in 2014. Currently, 19,546 children have been forcibly deported by Russia under the guise of “humanitarian” operations.

Ukraine officially recorded that the first child was abducted by Russians from occupied Crimea in 2014. This announcement came from Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubynets in an interview with "Voice of America".

Russians are destroying the identity of Ukrainian children. According to Lubinets, Ukraine is winning the information war regarding the deportation of children.

International Response and Legal Action

The issue of deported Ukrainian children is discussed on all international platforms, and Russia cannot do anything about it. Dmytro Lubinets emphasized that Ukraine has created a coalition for the return of children and is taking action at various levels.

"It is very important for everyone to understand the scale of this tragedy: we officially recorded that the first child was abducted by Russians from the occupied Ukrainian Crimea in 2014," Lubinets stated.

According to him, Russians took Ukrainian children or forcibly transferred them to temporarily occupied territories, took away their documents, and issued their own, often changing their information and forcing them to recognize themselves as Russians.

"Genocide has five features, one of which is the forced transfer of children from one ethnic group to another... All facts indicate that there is an official genocide currently underway in Ukraine" the spokesman emphasized.

He further stated that over time, Ukraine will collect all the necessary evidence and submit a lawsuit to the International Court of Justice regarding genocide.

Challenges and Protests

At the same time, the spokesman informs that the number of returned children is negligible compared to the scale of the tragedy. According to him, the biggest problem is obtaining information about the children. He denied claims by the Russian Foreign Minister that the country had provided Ukraine with information about abducted children.

"I have official replies from the international organizations I contacted - no lists, no information. The return of each child is like a small special operation - new approaches, new arguments, new partners, and even new logistics",
said Lubinets.

Legal Violations and International Scrutiny

There are cases where Ukrainian teenage boys deported to Russia are forced to participate in militarization programs and are conscripted into the Russian military," announced the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Andriy Kostin, during a conference in Riga entitled "Russia's war against children," as reported by the press service of the General Prosecutor's Office. According to Kostin, children are deprived of their Ukrainian identity.

"In our investigation, we review information on 19,546 children who were forcibly removed by Russia under the guise of 'humanitarian' operations. These children are not only resettled but also deprived of their Ukrainian identity: they are given Russian citizenship, placed in Russian families, forced to re-educate in the Russian language, and banned from speaking Ukrainian. Adolescent boys are often forced to participate in militarization programs"
Kostin emphasized.

Kostin added that such actions are prohibited by international humanitarian law. He also stated that the UN Independent Commission of Inquiry into Violations in Ukraine found that "in none of the situations reviewed by the Commission did the displacement of children meet the requirements of international humanitarian law. The displacements were not justified on security or medical grounds."

"We must seize every opportunity to effectively address these flagrant violations of international law and bring children home. We have neither legal nor moral grounds to stop until every child returns home safe and sound," appealed the Prosecutor General.
