The Institute for War Studies (ISW) reports in its latest report that Ukrainian soldiers in the Kherson Oblast have moved to the occupied bank of the Dnieper. Geolocation material published on October 18 shows that Ukrainian troops advanced north of Pishchanivka (14 km east of Kherson and 3 km from the Dnieper) and Poima (11 km east of Kherson and 4 km from the Dnieper).

The ISW report shows that Russians are concerned about the ongoing military activities of Ukrainians on the eastern coast of the Kherson Oblast. They see this activity as part of a potential larger Ukrainian operation.

Analysts add that Piszczaniwka and Poima are important towns located near the bridges. The Russians believe that the offensive in the Kherson Oblast may be intended to divert the attention of Russian forces from other parts of the front.

Putin said about the Ukrainian offensive in the Kherson region

On Wednesday, October 18, at a press conference following the results of his visit to China, the Russian president said that Ukraine was attacking Russian positions in the Kherson Oblast.

"They have started the long-announced and expected counteroffensive – now towards Kherson. There is no result yet, but there are losses. The Ukrainians have no result, just like in Zaporizhzhia and in other directions"

said the Russian dictator.

The right bank of the Kherson Oblast, occupied by Russians at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, was retaken by Ukraine during last year's autumn counteroffensive. The left bank of the region remains occupied by Russian troops.
