Polish and German Government Leaders: We Will Not Allow Ukraine Fatigue

Polish and German Leaders Unite for Ukraine's Defense

In the coming months, we aim to significantly enhance our air defense capabilities and ammunition production, declared Prime Minister Donald Tusk and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a joint conference.

Both government leaders met in Berlin to discuss matters of utmost importance for both countries as well as for Europe.

As Chancellor Scholz emphasized, Russian imperialism poses a threat to collective security. "No one should jeopardize the security of Europe," he said. "Poland's security is also our security; it is very important to us."

He recalled that two years ago, Russia invaded Ukraine. "Since then, it has been waging a ruthless war. Ukrainians are bravely defending their country, and Germany and Poland are among the countries providing the most assistance to Ukraine," he said.

"In the future, we want to cooperate even more closely".

He also proposed that Poland, Germany, and France give a new status to the Weimar Triangle. "So that our foreign ministers can meet and discuss in this format," he said.

Security Above All Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk summarized the most important issues raised by both leaders. "We talked about the most important need, which is security," he said. "The security of our homelands, the whole of Europe, but also our neighbors, such as Ukraine.

History has been incredibly cruel and surprising. A few years ago, no one would have thought that Poland and Germany would also cooperate militarily in defending Ukraine against Russia," he added.

In his view, the most important thing for both countries should be to ensure the unity of Europe in the face of Russia's aggressive policies.

"It is absolutely crucial for the future of Europe that we draw the right lessons from both our distant and recent history", he explained.

"Security has many dimensions – such as the defense of Ukraine, a common energy policy, and food security. Poland and Germany, as the most engaged in policies towards Ukraine, must take responsibility for strengthening this policy," he promised.

Increasing the Military Capabilities of Poland and Germany The Polish and German government leaders discussed the need to intensify cooperation in air defense. "We want to be practical and realistic here," said Donald Tusk.

"In the coming months, we aim to achieve much greater air defense capabilities and production capacities for ammunition. We must believe that the European Union can be a power not only in civilization, economy, and science, but also in the military. This is not our choice; it is a necessity."

He also referred to the idea of reviving the Weimar Triangle. "From our point of view, the Weimar Triangle will make sense if everyone takes it seriously," said the Polish Prime Minister. "Vladimir Putin must see and will see that there will be no such thing as 'Ukraine fatigue' in Europe. We will not give up on Ukraine. The Weimar Triangle could play a significant role here."
