- Russia attacked a civilian cargo ship in the Black Sea with missiles on August 24, announced British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. He added that the attack was thwarted by Ukrainian air defense. Britain and the US have warned that Russia may expand attacks on civilian shipping in the Black Sea.
"We know from declassified intelligence that the Russian military targeted multiple missiles at a civilian cargo ship in the Black Sea on August 24," Rishi Sunak told the House of Commons while briefing MPs on the G20 summit in New Delhi.
The British Ministry of Foreign Affairs specified that the target of the attack was a Liberian-flagged freighter moored in the port and that it was fired upon by a ship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
The attack used, among others, two Kalibr missiles, but none of the missiles hit the target as they were shot down by Ukrainian air defense.
- Putin is trying to win a war he cannot win. By attacking cargo ships and Ukrainian infrastructure, Russia is harming the rest of the world, Foreign Minister James Cleverly said.
Britain and the United States have warned that after Russia withdraws from the Black Sea Grains Initiative, it may expand attacks on civilian shipping in the Black Sea.
