Escalating tensions: North Korea fires artillery shells at disputed border

Tension between North Korea and South Korea is escalating as the country, led by Kim Jong Un, fired more than 60 artillery shells at the disputed maritime border. In response, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff called on Pyongyang to refrain from actions that threaten peace.

Tension is rising. North Korea opened fire

North Korea fired over 60 artillery shells on Saturday towards the disputed sea border with South Korea, as reported by the South Korean armed forces and quoted by Reuters.

This marks the second such action by North Korea recently. On Friday morning, the country, led by Kim Jong Un, fired over 200 artillery shells on its territory near the island, flying towards the west coast near the maritime border with South Korea. In response, Seoul ordered the evacuation of civilians on nearby islands, and the South Korean army conducted live ammunition exercises.

In connection with Saturday's events, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff appealed to the command in Pyongyang to refrain from actions that threaten peace on the Korean Peninsula and lead to an escalation of tensions.

North Korea does not want peace

North Korea appears to be uninterested in peace. Since December 29, joint South Korean-American exercises took place for several days in the border city of Pocheon, located 46 kilometers northeast of Seoul. At the time, North Korean state media claimed that South Korea had started the new year with "self-destructive" actions, warning that the chances of a clash between the two sides would be the highest this year.

Kim Jong Un stated that previous efforts to normalize inter-Korean relations were "a mistake that cannot be made again." The state news agency KCNA reported that the North Korean dictator described relations between the two countries as "hostile".
