The Ukrainian Armed Forces are building a huge network of fortifications in the areas north of Kyiv in the Chernihiv Oblast. There is a fear that Russia may attack again from this direction.
High military activity near Kyiv
The Ukrainian army is increasingly afraid of another attack by the Russian army from the border with Belarus or Russia, as was the case at the beginning of the war at the turn of winter and spring in 2022. Two lines of defense are being built near the border with a huge network of various fortifications in the form of barbed wire fences, the famous dragon's teeth, trenches, and bunkers.
They are intended to stop Russian soldiers and heavy equipment from quickly entering Ukrainian territory. In the event of an attack, fortifications can seriously slow down aggressors and allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine and its allies to bring the necessary forces and equipment to these areas to repel the attack.
Although these types of fortifications have been built since the beginning of the war, the scale of their construction has recently been increased.
As a result of their defeats on the front in the Kharkiv and Donetsk Oblasts, the Russians are increasingly making attacks on the border in the Sumy Oblast in Ukraine. Groups of aggressors often cross the border and attack civilian objects in nearby towns in order to intimidate the local population.
Although these Russian raids are not conducted on a large scale, this can change very quickly. In this way, the Russians can prepare for a larger offensive that will allow them to get to Kyiv faster. We would like to remind you that the Kremlin has gathered 300 000 soldiers and thousands of tanks and armored vehicles in reserve on the front.

ISW recently reported that the Kremlin may be preparing a winter offensive, taking advantage of Ukraine's current weakness and lack of support from the US. The Russian attack would take place not only from the Kharkiv Oblast, but also from its territory bordering all Ukrainian oblasts surrounding Kyiv.
Therefore, the Ukrainian Armed Forces prefer to play it safe and prepare now for such developments.
Currently, the Kremlin has launched its campaign of missile and drone attacks on the critical infrastructure of Ukraine's cities. Kyiv is attacked almost every night. Russia wants to use low temperatures and the winter season to cause humanitarian chaos and destabilize social life in our eastern neighbor.
The US and NATO countries announced that they will send more air defense systems to Ukraine to protect cities and civilians.
