On Tuesday, the Russians blew up a dam on the Dnipro river. The hydroelectric power plant is located in the Russian-occupied part of the Kherson region in southern Ukraine. The water reached to the center of Nowa Kakhovka, and several dozen other towns are at risk. Ukrainian services warn of a critical condition, residents are being evacuated. Journalists of the project “Schemes” (Sхеми) published on Twitter satellite images taken by the Planet corporation on June 4 and 6. It compares the dam before and after blowing up.

Threat to the Zaporozhian Nuclear Power Plant

Breaking the dam and evacuating the inhabitants is being used by the Russian army, which is shelling the endangered areas, said the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihot Klymenko in a message on Telegram. Mines brought to the surface by the rising water also pose a threat.
The explosion in Nova Kakhovka may have deplorable consequences for the inactive Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Pumped water from the Kakhovsky reservoir cools the reactors.
“The water level in the reservoir was about 16.4 m at 8 am. If it drops below 12.7 m, it will not be possible to pump it. Damage to the dam is currently reducing the water level by about 5 cm per hour” Rafael Grossi said in a statement. , Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The agency assures that at the moment there is no threat to the nuclear power plant and there are still alternative methods of cooling the reactors.

The destruction of the dam may be a “sentence” for the Russians in the occupied Crimea. — The Crimean Peninsula will be cut off from the water from the Dnieper, which in the future will make it easier for Ukrainians to besiege Crimea and may affect its liberation at a lower cost.
