Alexei Navalny is dead. Barack Obama comments

"Aleksei Navalny was a fearless advocate for his beliefs and died unbroken by the tyranny he opposed," former US President Barack Obama wrote about him. The Russian opposition leader passed away in a Russian penal colony.

"Aleksei Navalny is no longer alive", the Russian prison service announced on Friday. The opponent of Vladimir Putin was 47 years old. Navalny had been in penal colonies for over three years.

Reports of the opposition figure's death have been commented on by politicians and public figures from around the world since Friday. Former US President Barack Obama also spoke out.

"Aleksei Navalny was a fearless advocate for his beliefs and died unbroken by the tyranny he opposed. He fought against corruption, inspired millions, and never hesitated in his pursuit of freedom of speech, justice, and a Russia accountable to its people, not a dictator"
reads the social media post.

"He perished in unwavering defense of his vision of a better future for his country—a vision and bold example that will never die", Obama emphasized.

"He lost consciousness almost immediately," it was reported. An ambulance was called to the scene.

"All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, but they did not yield a positive result. Emergency medical personnel confirmed the convict's death. The causes of death are being established," the Federal Penitentiary Service stated.

Medical rescuers performed resuscitation on Navalny for over half an hour, according to the Interfax agency.

On February 14, Kira Yarmysh, Navalny's press secretary, announced that he had been sent to solitary confinement for the 27th time during his time in prison.

Vladimir Putin was informed of Navalny's death, TASS reported. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated, "The causes of the death of the convict Aleksei Navalny should be clarified by doctors."

"We do not have confirmation yet. Navalny's lawyer is currently on his way to Charp. As soon as we receive any information, we will inform you," Navalny's press secretary conveyed on social media.

Arrest of Aleksei Navalny

Aleksei Navalny was arrested in January 2021 during a passport check at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport. The opposition figure returned from Germany, where he was recovering from poisoning.

In March 2022, he was sentenced to nine years in a strict-regime penal colony. In August 2023, he was sentenced again. This time, he received a 19-year prison term in a penal colony.

Initially, Navalny served his sentence in a colony in Mielechowo, about 250 km east of Moscow. He was later transferred to penal colony No. 3 in Charp.
