Ukraine and UK sign historic security agreement amid rising tensions with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signed a “historic agreement” on security. On Friday, Rishi Sunak visited Kyiv. The purpose of the British Prime Minister's visit to the Ukrainian capital was to confirm that the West continues to support Ukraine, which is fighting against Russia.
"Today is a breakthrough moment in the history of Europe. Ukraine and Great Britain have signed a new, unprecedented security agreement"
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced via the X website.
"This is not an ordinary declaration. It is a reality that will come as a result of our cooperation, including the security commitments made by a great world power like Great Britain," the Ukrainian leader explained in a statement.
"If the UK and other countries had provided this level of guarantees after 1991, there would have been no Russian aggression at all. Our shared goal is to ensure that an attack on Ukraine never happens again once the current Russian aggression is stopped and Ukraine is strengthened," said Volodymyr Zelensky.

As reported by the Interfax-Ukraine agency, this includes intelligence data, cybersecurity issues, and defense industry cooperation. The Ukrainian-British agreement refers to the arrangements of the G-7 countries regarding providing bilateral security guarantees to Ukraine.
After the meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, Rishi Sunak confirmed the increase in arms aid for Kyiv to £2.5 billion in 2024-2025. At least £200 million will be allocated to order and produce a thousand drones for Ukraine: surveillance, long-range strike, and maritime machines.
In December, Ukraine, G7 countries, and several Global South countries held a secret meeting. The terms of possible peace talks with Russia were discussed, Bloomberg reported. Secret talks between national security advisers took place on December 16 in Saudi Arabia.
"The meeting followed broader, publicly disclosed meetings aimed at countering Moscow's attempts to divide and portray Ukraine and its allies as unwilling to negotiate an end to the war"

"The secrecy served to ensure that participating countries felt more comfortable in each other's presence. Participants explained that the smaller format allowed for a more free and honest discussion about the so-called peace formula, plans to continue this process, and the principles of potential future talks with Russia," Bloomberg reported.
