Zelenskys adviser resigned. His statements about the attack on the Dnipro were quoted by Russian propaganda

Oleksiy Aretovych

Adviser to the Chancellery of the President of Ukraine Oleksiy Arestovych resigned on Tuesday morning. After the attack on a block of flats in Dnipro, Aretovych claimed that a Russian missile had been shot down by Ukrainians, as a result of which it fell on the building. His statement caused great indignation in the media and was also picked up by Russian propaganda.

Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to the Chancellery of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, announced his resignation on Tuesday morning in social media. He published a short entry and a photo of his handwritten letter of resignation.

Zelensky's adviser resigned. “Fundamental Error”

The handwritten document is dated January 17, 2023. “I want to show an example of civilized behavior. Fundamental error, and therefore departure,” Oleksiy Arestovych wrote in a Facebook post.

Aretovych spoke about the attack on the Dnipro. The theory was picked up by Russian propaganda

A collection of signatures was conducted on the dismissal of Aretovych. These are the consequences of his statement regarding the last Russian attack on the Dnipro. Recall that on Saturday late afternoon a Russian Kh-22 anti-ship missile fell on an apartment block, killing at least 40 people.

After Saturday's attack by the Russians, Aretovych said that a Russian missile was supposed to be shot down by Ukrainian air defenses and consequently fall on a residential building. This theory spread rapidly in the Russian media, because it allowed the Russians to disown another bestial attack on civilians.

The presidential aide later apologized for his words. He also explained that he was tired. Hours later, however, he withdrew his apology.

Aretovych's statement was sharply criticized, e.g., by the mayor of the Dnipro, Boris Filatov. He called on the Security Service of Ukraine to launch an investigation into the president's adviser. Gen. Mykola Oleszczuk (commander of the Ukrainian Air Force) explained that the Ukrainians were unable to shoot down such missiles.
