Where the wind will carry radiation in the next three days in the event of an accident at the ZNPP

If a serious accident occurs at one of the power units of the ZNPP, the radiation cloud will move southeast toward Russia. The experts of the State Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority of Ukraine made the corresponding estimated forecast for the next three days, August 29–31, 2022. This is reported by the official Telegram channel of "Energoatom".

In the next three days, the wind will carry radiation to the southern part of Ukraine and the southwestern regions of Russia in the event of an accident at the Zaporizhzhya NPP. More specifically: the direction of the wind is southeast. Consequently, the radiation will spread to part of the Zaporizhia, Kherson, and Luhansk regions, and will also completely cover the Crimea, Donetsk region, and neighboring regions of Russia: Rostov region, Krasnodar region, and Stavropol region.

By committing acts of nuclear terrorism, the Russian Federation endangers at least 15 million of its own citizens. In the event of a radiation accident, the population is recommended to limit their stay in open areas without urgent need and to introduce a special mode of operation of schools and kindergartens.

In addition, there is a need for iodine prophylaxis. Potassium iodide is taken once after notification from official authorities. Drug dosage for different population groups:

  • children up to 1 month (infants and breastfed children) - 16 mg;
  • children from 1 month to 3 years - 32 mg;
  • children from three to 12 years old - 62.5 mg;
  • adolescents from 13 to 18 years old, adults up to 40 years old, pregnant and lactating mothers - 125 mg.

Potassium iodide is not prescribed to persons over 40 years of age. It is also recommended to seal the premises (windows, doors), turn off air conditioners, fans, close ventilation ducts, chimneys, etc.; organize sanitary barriers at the entrances to the premises, including removing outer clothing and changing shoes.

In addition, in potentially dangerous areas, it is recommended to take measures to seal and pack food, water, linen, documents and valuables, to limit forest use and not to violate the ban on hunting and fishing in local water bodies.

To prevent dusting in open areas, decontamination of areas is recommended, as well as the introduction of special restrictions for motor vehicles to drive to the side of the road, driving on unpaved roads.
