Ukrainian troops launched a drone attack on four Russian oblasts, targeting the Kremniy EŁ plant, which produces components for Iskander missiles. This information was confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defense, as quoted by the Ukrainian news portal Ukrainska Pravda.

Massive drone attack

The Russian-Ukrainian war is still ongoing, and the scope of attacks extends beyond Ukraine. On the night of December 29-30, 2023, Ukrainian troops conducted a massive assault on Russian territory with the aim of severing the enemy's strategic weapons.

In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Russian air defense successfully destroyed or intercepted all 32 Ukrainian drones. The attack occurred over the Bryansk, Orlov, Kursk, and Moscow oblasts. The Russian Ministry of Defense underscored the effectiveness of its defense measures against aerial threats.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of the Belgorod region, was quoted by the Ukrainian website Suspilne as stating that air defense systems "shot down a number of air targets approaching the city" of Belgorod. According to preliminary data, the attack had tragic consequences, resulting in one person killed and four injured.

The target was the Iskander missile factory

The primary target of the attacks in Bryansk, according to Ukrainian television station Espreso, was the “Kremniy EL”. These plants are responsible for producing components for Iskander missiles and Pantsir anti-aircraft systems. Kremniy EŁ is one of the largest microelectronic parts factories in Russia, underscoring the scale and seriousness of the attack.

The Iskander system has been utilized since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, with additional launchers recently deployed near the border. Russia primarily employs Iskander-M short-range ballistic missile launchers, which also includes Iskander-K versions with Kalibr-NK cruise missiles and the Iskander-E export variant.

Russian missiles can carry high-explosive, cluster, thermobaric, or even nuclear warheads, with an estimated range of about 500 km. To counter such threats, medium-range systems like the Patriot, S-300, or SAMP/T sets are necessary.
