The World Health Organization has updated its list of drugs in the event of a nuclear disaster

The World Health Organization has updated the list of medicines that countries should stockpile in the event of a nuclear and radiological emergency. Medicines containing, among others, iodine and cytokine are to be delivered to the warehouses.

In radiation-risk situations, people can be exposed to radiation from negligible to life-threatening doses. Governments must make treatment available to those who need it - quickly - said Dr. Maria Neira, p.o. WHO deputy director general.

The World Health Organization informs that the new publication replaces the existing report on stockpiling in the event of a radiological emergency, which was created in 2007. The authors of the new version took into account new substances that have arisen thanks to the development of medicine in recent years. In addition, the report analyzes the main elements needed to develop, maintain and manage medical resources in the event of a radiation emergency.

What drugs are to be stocked?

The authors also drew attention to the role of national health systems and WHO in a crisis situation. “WHO provides advice and guidance to countries on public health preparedness and response to radiation emergencies, including stockpiling. In health emergencies, WHO can assist in ordering or making medical supplies available to countries,” it said.

The list of drugs that should be collected in the event of a nuclear disaster includes, among others, preparations containing stable iodine, Prussian blue (used in the case of poisoning with heavy metals, e.g. thallium and cesium), and a cytokine (used in the treatment of radiation sickness). In addition, it is worth stocking warehouses with anti-diarrhoeal, anti-emetic and anti-infective drugs.
