The Romanian government decided to donate a Patriot missile system to Ukraine. The donation, approved on September 2, still requires parliamentary approval.
The Romanian government, in an extraordinary session on Monday, decided to donate a set of Patriot missiles to Ukraine. "Once the law is approved by parliament, the government will be able to issue a decision that will make the donation operational," said government spokesperson Mihai Constantin.
As announced, on September 2, during a government meeting, the ministers led by Marcel Ciolacu approved an important donation to Ukraine. The country will transfer one of its seven Patriot surface-to-air missile systems in a 3+ configuration.
Talks of Romania donating the system to its neighbors have been ongoing since late June, when the donation was approved by the Supreme Council of National Defense. Before making the decision, authorities reassured the Romanian public that this would not diminish the country’s defensive capabilities. The Ministry of Defense has been exploring opportunities to further strengthen air defense forces for several months.
"Once the law is approved by parliament, the government will be able to issue a decision that will make the donation operational," reiterated Mihai Constantin, quoted by Reuters.
The decision to donate the Patriot system must now be voted on by Romania's bicameral parliament. This is not expected to be an issue, as the ruling coalition holds a stable majority. The vote is anticipated to take place as soon as possible. The last parliamentary session of this term began on Monday.
In the early hours of September 2, Ukrainian air defense destroyed around 20 cruise and ballistic missiles over Kyiv, according to the city's military administration. Debris from the rockets fell in several districts, damaging buildings and injuring at least three people.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the Russians used Kh-101 cruise missiles, launched from Tu-95 strategic bombers, as well as "Iskander" ballistic missiles in the attack. A drone was also sent over Kyiv but was shot down. Damage assessments are ongoing, and an air raid alert is in effect throughout Ukraine.
