Russian attacks grind on in eastern Ukraine as Bakhmut is 'destroyed'

Since last fall, Russia has lost nearly 23,000 invaders in the Battle of Bakhmut. This is 7.5 times more than the losses of the Ukrainian army in this direction, Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, told the Italian newspaper Corriere.

The Russian occupiers are losing a battalion in a day in the Bakhmut area

“Since September 1, when Moscow began using convicts as mercenaries in Bakhmut, 22 816 people have died. Our losses were 7.5 times less” Danilov said when asked why Ukraine was desperately defending Bakhmut.

Recall that US President Joe Biden recently stated that Russia lost over 100 000 of its troops in the Battle of Bakhmut. However, the American leader did not specify whether it was about the dead or the general losses of the occupiers. Also, earlier Ukraine's Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov announced that the Russian Federation had lost around 70,000 troops in the Bakhmut area. He noted that in the Bakhmut district, the occupiers are losing a battalion a day.

“We believe the capture of Bakhmut likely cost Russia at least 60,000 casualties in the Bakhmut-Popasna sector during the year-long battle” a Western official told Sky News on condition of anonymity. He explained that 60 000 was a “prudent estimate” of Russian casualties on that part of the front, which included both wounded and dead. Of these, the official added, at least a 30% are dead.

What is Bakhmut's current situation?

The Ukrainian military still holds the southwestern outskirts of the city. There are still militants in Bakhmut.

“The situation in the city of Bakhmut is conditionally stable. We control the south-western outskirts of the city. The Wagnerians have not yet left the city. They are training with the regular military units that have arrived” she wrote.

Malyar reported that in the direction of Bakhmut, the Russian occupation forces tried to regain their lost positions but retreated. She also noted that the Russian army is now exhausted by the constant attacks it has been carrying out for several months in the directions of Avdiyiv, Marin, Lyman, and Bakhmut.

At the same time, regular Russian troops probably largely replaced Wagner's forces in Bakhmut, given the low pace of the offensive in this area. The leader of the Communist Party of Ukraine, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said that 99 percent of troops of his fighters left the city. This is reported by the Institute for War Studies.

Russian bloggers also claim that Ukrainian forces are strengthening defensive lines in the region as the Russian military intends to resume its offensive on June 5.

Currently, the invaders are still concentrating their forces on trying to seize the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. At the same time, Russian troops continued to expand the fortifications in the rear of the Kherson region. The Southern Operational Command of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian aviation units carried out air strikes on enemy concentration areas in the Skadovsk region.
